Repair the panel that failed — not the whole sofa
Leather furniture rarely wears out evenly. The damage concentrates where the piece is used hardest: a seam splits on the seat cushion you always sit on, the front of an arm wears through, one seat panel cracks while the back still looks new. That is good news, because leather is made of panels. A localised failure can usually be fixed by re-stitching the seam, patching and colour-restoring the spot, or replacing that single panel — a far smaller job than recovering the entire sofa.
Atlas has been an upholstery workshop on Boulevard Cavendish since 1967, and leather has always been part of the work. The honest constraint in leather repair is matching: aged leather changes colour and texture, so we look at your piece before quoting and tell you how close a match is realistic. When the leather is worn across the whole surface, or peeling, we will say that a re-cover is the better answer — and we re-cover in full-grain, top-grain or faux leather from Italian and Canadian suppliers. Leather sofas and couches
Split seams on seat cushions, torn cushion faces, worn arm fronts, cracked seat panels and sagging leather seats. When the cushions have gone soft underneath, the foam and springs are rebuilt at the same time. For fabric sofas, see our sofa repair page.
Sectionals and recliners
Leather sectionals and recliners wear unevenly because one or two seats take most of the use. Replacing the worn panels on those seats — rather than the whole sectional — is often the most sensible repair.
Leather chairs

Faux leather and vinyl
Torn vinyl, split seams and peeling faux or bonded leather. Tears and seams can be repaired; peeling surfaces cannot be patched durably, so we tell you when re-covering the affected parts is the honest fix.
Restaurant and commercial seating
Leather and vinyl banquettes, booths, bar and dining chairs and waiting-room seating take far more wear than residential furniture. We repair in batches and schedule around closing hours. See restaurant banquettes.
Re-covering in new leather
When the leather is worn out across the whole piece, we strip it and re-cover it in full-grain, top-grain or faux leather, renewing the foam, webbing and springs underneath. A solid frame is worth it.
Which one your leather piece actually needs
Repair — the damage is small
A seam has opened, or there is a small tear or scuff, and the leather around it is still supple and in good condition. Re-stitching, patching and colour restoration are the right call: the smallest job and the fastest turnaround.
Replace a panel — one section is done
One seat panel, one cushion face or one arm front is torn or worn through while the rest of the piece is fine. We replace that panel, or a matching group of panels, and match the leather as closely as the age of the piece allows.
Re-cover — the leather is finished
The leather is cracked, faded or worn across the whole visible surface, or bonded or faux leather is peeling. Patching would not last. If the frame is sound, re-covering in new leather gives you a piece that is effectively new.

Send clear photos of the damage and of the whole piece, in daylight if you can — it helps us judge the colour and condition of the leather. Or bring it to the Cavendish workshop. We tell you whether it needs a repair, a panel or a re-cover, how close a colour match is realistic, and put a written estimate in your hands with no obligation.
2. The repair, at the workshop
Leather repairs are done at the workshop, where the piece can be opened up properly: seams re-stitched, panels cut and sewn, and any collapsed foam, webbing or springs underneath rebuilt while the cover is off.
3. Back to you
Most repairs finish in one to two weeks, against three to five for a full re-cover. Pickup and delivery across Greater Montreal is included. If matching leather has to be sourced, we give you that timeline with the estimate rather than after.

Usually, yes. A split seam is re-stitched. A small tear or scuff can often be patched and colour-restored. When a whole section is torn or worn through — typically a seat panel or the front of an arm — we replace that individual leather panel rather than recovering the entire sofa. Replacing one panel is a much smaller job than a full re-cover, and it is the most common leather repair we do.

Colour and grain matching on aged leather is the real limiting factor in leather repair. Leather darkens, fades and softens with years of use and sunlight, so a new hide will not be identical to a twenty-year-old one. We look at the piece or your photos before you commit and tell you honestly how close a match is achievable. Where a visible difference would bother you, we may suggest replacing a matching set of panels — for example all the seat panels — so the change reads as intentional.

Peeling or flaking is the surface layer of bonded leather or faux leather separating from its backing. Once it starts, it spreads, and patching one spot does not stop it — so we will not sell you a patch that fails in a few months. If the frame, springs and foam are sound, the durable fix is to re-cover the affected parts, or the whole piece, in genuine leather or a quality faux leather. We tell you plainly whether that is worth it for your sofa.

Repair makes sense when the damage is localised — one split seam, one torn cushion face, one worn seat panel — and the rest of the leather is still in good condition. Re-covering makes sense when the leather is worn, cracked or faded uniformly across the whole visible surface, or when it is peeling. Because a leather piece is stripped when it is re-covered, the foam, webbing and springs are renewed at the same time. We assess which one your piece needs and tell you, even when that is the smaller job.

Every leather repair is quoted individually, because the cost depends on the piece, the type and extent of the damage, whether a panel has to be replaced, which leather is needed to match, and the labour involved. A re-stitched seam and a sectional needing several new panels are very different jobs. We do not publish fixed price lists, because a number that ignores those factors would mislead you.
